Permanent | Salary DOE
Location: Farnborough | 5 days per week onsite
We’re partnering with a leading organisation within the UK defence and cyber sector to appoint an experienced Embedded Software Engineer at Senior or Principal level.
This is an exciting opportunity to work within a highly skilled, multidisciplinary engineering team developing innovative technologies for complex and critical environments.
You’ll contribute across the full development lifecycle, from early-stage research, ideation and prototyping through to experimentation, de-risking and full product development, applying your technical expertise to solve challenging real-world problems.
The Opportunity
As an Embedded Software Engineer, you’ll work as part of a small multidisciplinary team developing advanced solutions across software, FPGA and associated technologies.
You’ll combine strong embedded software engineering expertise with creativity and technical curiosity, researching emerging technologies and identifying how they can be applied to develop innovative solutions.
The role would suit an experienced engineer who enjoys working across complex technical challenges and wants exposure to a broad range of technologies within a highly specialised environment.
Key Responsibilities
You’ll play a key role in researching, designing and developing innovative engineering solutions by:
- Designing, developing and testing embedded software for complex systems.
- Contributing across the full engineering lifecycle, from initial research and ideation through to product development.
- Developing solutions using technologies including C/C++, Rust and Python.
- Working with embedded Linux and bare-metal MCU environments.
- Supporting the development and integration of FPGA-based solutions.
- Contributing to technical experimentation, prototyping and de-risking activities.
- Working collaboratively across software, electronics, hardware and RF engineering disciplines.
- Exploring opportunities to apply AI, machine learning and emerging technologies.
- Helping define and develop solutions to complex customer requirements.
- Ensuring engineering activities comply with appropriate information security and regulatory requirements.
- Providing technical expertise and leadership appropriate to Senior or Principal level.
About You
You’ll be an experienced embedded software engineer with strong technical knowledge and a genuine interest in researching, developing and applying emerging technologies.
You will have experience across some of the following:
- C/C++, Rust and/or Python.
- Embedded Linux.
- Bare-metal MCU development.
- AI and machine learning technologies.
- Full-stack embedded software engineering, from device drivers through to GUIs and WebApps.
- FPGA development using technologies such as Vivado, Vitis and ModelSim.
- Digital Signal Processing.
- Electronic design, including schematic capture and PCB design.
- Radio technologies, Software Defined Radio, GNU Radio and/or RFNoC.
- Developing creative technical solutions to complex engineering problems.
- Working collaboratively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
You’ll also hold a degree in an engineering, mathematical or science-based subject, or have equivalent relevant experience.
Security Requirements
Due to the nature of the work, you must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the appropriate UK security clearance, including DV clearance following attainment of SC clearance.
Applicants must meet the relevant eligibility requirements for security clearance. This includes British citizenship and the required UK residency history: typically five years for SC clearance and ten years for DV clearance.
Why Apply?
This is a fantastic opportunity to work at the forefront of embedded engineering within a highly specialised and technically challenging environment.
In return, you’ll benefit from:
- Permanent Senior/Principal-level opportunity.
- Exposure to advanced embedded software, FPGA, RF and emerging technologies.
- The opportunity to contribute throughout the complete development lifecycle.
- Varied work spanning research, prototyping, experimentation and full product development.
- The opportunity to solve complex technical challenges with meaningful real-world applications.
- A collaborative, multidisciplinary engineering environment with significant scope for continued technical development.
