Job Description

Are you a talented and experienced e-learning producer, manager, publisher or learning & development professional? Are you passionate about the world of film, TV, visual effects, animation and games? Would you like to manage the development and maintenance of courses and eLearning systems to be used by major industry broadcasters and studios like BBC, ITV and Sky? Do you want to help make a difference in developing careers and skills, and helping people progress within the screen industry regardless of their background?
The E-learning Manager role offers an exciting opportunity to influence the success and impact of ScreenSkills’ online courses during a period of significant transformation and change in the screen sector, and the start of an exciting, new five-year strategy for the company. They will also be a key part of the team delivering our ScreenSkills Training Passport programme.
The E-learning Manager will oversee the full learning lifecycle, from identifying learning needs and defining outcomes, through content design and development, to evaluation and continuous improvement, ensuring each module delivers meaningful learning impact for its audience. This will include close management of the writing, development and future revisions of the script with subject matter experts, commissioning media assets like video and animations, and designing assessment tests. They will both carry out these tasks directly themselves and collaborate closely with e-learning developers contracted to deliver maintenance and development projects. [PB1]
This is a critical position within ScreenSkills given the central positions of online learning, certification, workforce data and the ScreenSkills Training Passport in our new strategy, and the significant success and wide usage of our modules since 2019. This will suit someone who has a strong background in e-learning, particularly content development and also instructional design, with a solid understanding of effective training and education, and ability to translate the specific nuances of the screen industries into clear, well-written learning content.   Key responsibilities:

  • Work with the Director of Vocational Skills to further develop ScreenSkills’ e-learning strategy to support training needs of those working in film and TV industries
  • Work with subject matter experts (SMEs) to map out learning outcomes and content for revised or new e-learning modules, including strategic Passport partners such as BBC, Sky and ITV.
  • Manage contracts with e-learning developer suppliers to deliver projects on schedule and to agreed budget
  • Oversee the development and updating of e-learning scripts and interactive activities in collaboration with e-learning developers, ensuring content suits the needs of those working in film and TV industries, and follows best practice in effective e-learning design. In some cases, develop content directly rather than via developers.
  • Oversee the development or revision of scripts for more complex media assets like videos and animations, in collaboration with e-learning developers
  • Manage review process of both existing and new e-learning with ScreenSkills internal industry experts and external stakeholders and partners from relevant parts of film and TV sector
  • Work closely with Platform Product Owner to develop and improve how e-learning modules are presented, completed and certified within ScreenSkills platform, including relevant functionality of the ScreenSkills Training Passport
  • Work with the internal ScreenSkills marketing and communications team to develop campaigns to promote e-learning to our users and beneficiaries.
  • Gain user feedback to build a bank of evidence and case studies on ScreenSkills e-learning to demonstrate impact of modules, and inform redevelopment and ongoing improvements.
  • Stay abreast of relevant changes within screen industries, attend internal and external meetings and events, and provide advice and support to other projects as required.
  • Any other responsibilities which are commensurate with the role.

[PB1] This sentence feels long. Suggested alternative: The E-learning Manager will oversee the full learning lifecycle,  from identifying learning needs and defining outcomes, through content design and development, to evaluation and continuous improvement,  ensuring each module delivers meaningful learning impact for its audience.    [PB2] I always suggest skipping educational requirements in JDs unless professional qualifications are explicitly required to perform the job. Otherwise you might limit your talent pool (fun fact - research shows women tend to apply for roles only if they have 100% skills listed in requirements)   [TW3] I’m happy to skip this too - assuming this is now going to be a consistent change to JDs?   [PB4] The skills list is super long, I’d suggest making bullet points more concise for better candidate experience. Suggestions below:

Strong experience designing and delivering e-learning or digital learning products, ideally in a training or publishing environment
Proven ability to write and edit clear, engaging e-learning content with subject matter experts
Experience defining learning outcomes and structuring effective e-learning modules
Track record of managing digital learning projects from concept to delivery (e.g. using tools such as Articulate Rise)
Experience commissioning and managing external suppliers, delivering to time and budget
Solid understanding of best practice in e-learning design and learner experience
Ability to use learner feedback and user needs to improve and evolve learning content
Working knowledge of e-learning platforms and learning management systems
Highly organised, methodical and able to work well under pressure
